The dual-edged sword of Hollywood cinema is the buddy picture. When done well, we are treated to the combination of Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte entertaining us all in 48 Hours. When done poorly, we receive dreck like the combination of Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte in Another 48 Hours. Spinal Tap was so right about the fine line between stupid and clever.

The new buddy pic, The Man, will attempt to stay on the life-affirming side of that line. This movie is a fish-out-of-water partners comedy starring Eugene Levy and Samuel L. Jackson. Levy, normally reduced to playing the comic relief in his projects, is a co-lead in a movie of this genre for the first time since the Armed and Dangerous days. BOP misses John Candy.

The story revolves around a police sting gone wrong. Jackson, playing a law enforcement official for approximately the 712th time, is running an ATF operation to take down a drug kingpin (Luke Goss of Blade II). When the Levy character, a traveling salesman, accidentally winds up in the middle of the sting, Jackson's character has no choice but to make the incompetent boob his new partner. (David Mumpower/BOP)
