A prequel to the critically acclaimed Comedy Central series of the same name, Strangers With Candy reunites the cast and writers for a look at what happened to the show's heroine, a 46-year-old former junkie who goes back to high school in an effort to restart her life - before events of the show get set into motion.
The story begins as Jerri emerges from a long-time prison stay, with her cellmates giving her a special goodbye riot in her honor. When Jerri finally arrives at her childhood home, she learns that her father, Guy (Dan Hedaya) has been in a coma for many years. Additional important information to which Jerri had not been privy is that he had re-married and had a son, Derrick (Joseph Cross). Because doctors say that Jerri's presence in the home might help Guy come out of his 32-year coma, Jerri's stepmother (Deborah Rush) reluctantly agrees to let the former drug addict move into their home.
On the following day, Jerri becomes determined to start over and to do so, goes to Flatpoint High School, where she is enrolled as a student by Principal Blackman (Greg Hollimon), a man with bigger things on his mind. He's just finished negotiations with the school board due to the fact that everyone at Flatpoint High has failing test scores. If his students can somehow manage to win the upcoming Science Fair, they'll be able to keep their school board funding. To that end, Blackman brings in Science Fair ringer Roger Beekman (Matthew Broderick) to lead a team. Science teacher Chuck Noblet (Stephen Colbert) will lead his own team, and Jerri joins, hoping that she might be able to make her father proud.
Of course, high school can't be high school without crushes and romances. Jerri liiiiiiiiiiikes Brason (Chris Pratt), the school jock. Jerri's friend Megawatti (Carlo Alban) has his eye on her. This potential love triangle will prove vital in the developing Science Fair competition.
Since Mr. Beekman is desperate to win the competition, he recruits art teacher Mr. Jellineck (Paul Dinello) to spice things up a bit. Only a few days before the deadline, Beekman discovers that rather than a super-nifty science project, all they have is a dance number. Turning to dirty play, Beekman and his team decide to take advantage of Brason's ability to charm Jerri to steal the schematics for her team's project - the Soup Can Superconductor.
Will Jerri do the right thing? And more importantly, will she pick the right guy? Will the movie's overtones be as creepy as the shows? North American audiences will find out when the movie version of Strangers With Candy receives its limited theatrical release. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
