Luc Besson's worldview has spawned some pretty creative and entertaining projects, but it took him off the rails with Lucy. Scarlet is just vapid. |
Jamaica Kincaid's 1990 novel is being adapted to the big screen. The popular fictional story revolves around the titular, Lucy. The teenager has recently moved from the West Indies to a metropolitan American city in order to escape her old life. There, she finds work as an au pair for a seemingly perfect family of six.
Over time, Lucy begins to offer a bemused perspective of her new country, city, and family. In between sexual explorations of her own, Lucy offers a detached study of the cracks beginning to show in the facade of her employers' perfect marriage.
The cast for the project is frontlined by Zoe Saldana of The Terminal, who portrays Lucy. Justin Theroux of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle plays a local who befriends her. Natasha Richardson of Maid in Manhattan plays Lucy's employer, Mariah. BOP fave Bonnie Hunt has been cast as Mariah's best friend and Kip Pardue of Remember the Titans plays her brother, a man with whom Lucy falls in love. Maggie Greenwalt, who directed the underrated 2000 release, Songcatcher, helms the project. (David Mumpower/BOP)
