I liked this movie so much better in 1987 when it was called Hiding Out. Nick Cannon is no Jon Cryer, either. |
After finding breakout success in the marching band movie Drumline, the film's young star, Nick Cannon, pitched an idea to Miramax. The results of that pitch come to fruition with the thriller/comedy Underclassman.
In the film, Cannon will portray at 24-year-old rookie detective with baby-face, schoolboy looks. Because he looks so young, none of his colleagues take him seriously. His assignments tend toward the inane, such as petty trips to the mall and eventually, a 21 Jump Street-esque job at an elite private school. In the middle of his job, he unexpectedly uncovers an international stolen-car ring involving some of the students, and finds himself on a far more significant case than he's ever had before.
Along with Cannon, a variety of up-and-coming young actors and actresses will costar. Kelly Hu (X2: X-Men United) will play a member of the police force who is a good friend to Cannon's character, while Shawn Ashmore (Iceman in X2: X-Men United) is the primary leader of the car thieves. Roselyn Sanchez (Rush Hour 2) portrays a teacher who is in love with Cannon's character.
Cannon has developed a pretty devoted following among the MTV crowd, particularly as he has had a video in heavy rotation. Though the premise of the film isn't necessarily fresh, Cannon's charisma should make all the difference. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
