Frankie is a nine-year-old boy who is hearing impaired, and he and his single mom Lizzie (Emily Mortimer) have been constantly on the move as long as he can remember. Their newest place of residence is in a Scottish town on the sea.
There's a reason that Lizzie and her son have been such gypsies. She took Frankie and ran away from his father when he was very young, but has been protecting him from that potentially devastating truth for years. In order to keep Frankie believing that his father is a decent man who simply can be with them, Lizzie has fabricated a story that he has been constantly away at sea on the HMS Accra. To maintain this façade, Lizzie writes Frankie a make-believe letter from his father at an interval of every few weeks, regaling the lad with adventures in exotic lands.
Naturally, Frankie is fascinated by his dad's escapades, and tracks the Accra's journey as it makes its way around the world. Suddenly, he learns that the ship is due to dock in his very own hometown. Lizzie is faced with the decision of having to tell Frankie the truth or the safer alternative of finding someone to pose as his sailor father. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
