Four friends, recent college graduates, decide to have one last raging party before having to face the real world and jobs in the fall. Their vacation in a remote mountain cabin is soon interrupted when one of the friends becomes ill with some form of virulent, flesh-eating virus. The three healthy members of the party lock the sick one in a shed to prevent further contagion, and as they struggle to find a way to save their friend from a horrible death, they realize that any of them could be next, and must fight not only the impulse to destroy each other to spare themselves, but must also stave off a lynch mob formed by the local populace bent on destroying anyone who suffers from, or has come into contact with anyone who suffers from, the mysterious illness.
Studios seem to have rediscovered the draw of low-budget, well-made horror films in recent years, and have taken to releasing a few entries during the summer months aimed at the teen market. Cabin Fever appears to be yet another in this hallowed tradition, one that harkens back to the Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street model of teens dying one by one, although with the twist of an internal rather than external killer wreaking the havoc. The plot sounds decent, and let’s face it; the biggest draw for films of this type are an interesting premise and cool special effects. It probably doesn’t hurt that Lions Gate is playing up in its marketing that first-time Eli Roth is a protégé of the ever-bizarre David Lynch, which should guarantee a few twists and turns to the plot, as well as some pretty neat gross-out effects.
Since this likely cost next-to-nothing to make, the film doesn’t have to pull in record numbers at the box office to be a success. And if the word-of-mouth has the film living up to the promise of its claustrophobic premise - and that the effects are sufficiently gory - Cabin Fever should have a decent box office run before reaching the home video market, where it will likely enjoy even greater success.
