This dark comedy has been described in the trades as a combination of Heathers, Election and American Beauty. Marcos Siega, who has directed such cultish series as Veronica Mars and Oliver Beene, looks to continue that trend in movies as he helms from a screenplay by first-time writer Skander Halim.

After striking a chord with audiences thanks to her performance in Thirteen, Evan Rachel Wood stars as Kimberly, a rich and precocious teenager who frames her English teacher for sexual harassment. After doing so, life at her private Beverly Hills high school is turned topsy-turvy. James Wood portrays her father (and from many reports, he steals the show), while the always under-rated Ron Livingston plays a teacher/attorney who helps defend the accused.

After debuting at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, Pretty Persuasion was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize, though it didn't come out the winner. Like 2004's Napoleon Dynamite, Pretty Persuasion is poised to be the "teen" film that should emerge as an indie favorite by the time the year is over. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
