James L. Brooks is a Hollywood force. In addition to winning Academy Awards for writing, directing and producing Terms of Endearment (he was also nominated for various Oscars for films such as Broadcast News, Jerry Maguire and As Good As It Gets), he's been the executive producer of critically acclaimed television series like The Simpsons, Taxi, Lou Grant, and Mary Tyler Moore. He broke directors like Cameron Crowe and Wes Anderson onto the scene by backing them when few others in the business would have given such a vote of confidence. Now, Brooks returns to the writing and directing arena with the comedy/drama Spanglish, a film that is sure to be awards bait when that time rolls around in 2004.

Spanglish stars Paz Vega (seen previously in Pedro Almodóvar's Talk to Her) as a woman named Flor who emigrates from Mexico to Los Angeles. She's hoping to find a better life for herself and her daughter, Cristina (Victoria Luna). She's hired by John and Deborah Clasky (Adam Sandler and Téa Leoni), an affluent couple, to be their housekeeper, and cultures collide. Not only must Flor contend with the language barrier, Cristina's budding femininity and the strangeness of her eccentric new employers, she really never understood how perilous it might be to be embraced by such a family.
