Malibu's Most Wanted
Release Date:
April 18, 2003
Based on a comedy sketch that first appeared on the WB comedy/variety show The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, Malibu’s Most Wanted is the story of Brad Gluckman, played by Jamie Kennedy himself. Playing like a movie adaptation of the Offspring song “Pretty Fly for a White Guy,” Gluckman is a white guy who talks and acts like a “gangsta” in his attempt to be a rap star. His father, played by Ryan O’Neal, is running for the governor of California and finds his son’s behavior a little bit embarrassing (no!) and hires two Julliard-trained actors to pretend to be real gangstas and kidnap Brad to scare him straight, so to speak.
Considering that this movie is based on a sketch from a series that comes in sixth in its time slot (it recently lost to a show I’ve never even heard of), its box office prospects seem seriously limited. The “fish-out-of-water” concept will have been completely overdone by the time Malibu’s Most Wanted hits theaters (thanks to Bringing Down the House and Head of State), too. Add to these woes the fact that commercials and trailers are actually painfully unfunny, and you have all the ingredients for a box office bomb. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
