Thomas Beaumont has been invited to join an illicit love triangle in Paris. His role in the ménage will be to witness the sexual liaison of a much older man. It turns out to be something much more than that, though, as he sees the man's murder. One day later, Thomas' mother, an opera diva, tells him that his long-lost father has been in Paris for some time. The sad news is that he was murdered the night before.
It's pretty simple for Thomas to put two and two together as he realizes that he has witnessed the murder of his own father. What follows is a whirlwind of strange meetings and a series of cases of mistaken identity. Primary amongst these encounters is an eccentric actress who is completely thrown for a loop by the death of her psychiatrist, the infamous Docteur Rey.
Merci Docteur Rey is a Merchant Ivory production, but descriptions have it as far from what we've come to expect from them. The film is said to be in the tradition of Agatha Christie, with a bit of the voyeurism and titillation of the DePalma vein thrown in as well. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
