A yuppie family moves from the city to the country to restore and live in a ramshackle old mansion out in the boondocks in upstate New York. All seems idyllic, until the proverbial fly in the ointment arrives in the form of the house’s previous owner, who has just been released from prison and intends on reclaiming his ancestral mansion by any and all means at his disposal.

Cold Creek Manor sounds like many another family-gets-deal-on-house-
only-to-find-dark-secrets tale, with this one leaning towards the Cape Fear/Pacific Heights human-menace end of the spectrum, rather than the supernatural arena, although there are hints that the house holds a secret other than that its previous owner is an ex-con. And the cast is certainly B-list caliber, and should attract a fair number of moviegoers all on its own. But the key to making Cold Creek Manor a box office success will be marketing, and with the Disney marketing geniuses behind it, Touchstone should be able to pull out all the stops, getting out any early positive word generated by screenings and playing up any critical praise the movie receives. Marketing adult-themed thrillers is always a tough row, but if there’s good word-of-mouth, with the savvy Disney brings to the table, Cold Creek Manor should see some decent receipts. More can be told when a trailer is available and the ad campaign begins to take shape. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)

As you might have suspected, Dennis Quaid and La Stone play the lead couple, while the skanky Stephen Dorff unsurprisingly plays the ex-con. (Didn't we see this on the Simpsons when Snake goes after Homer for buying Snake's car at a police auction?) Kristen Stewart, who previously played the gender ambiguous daughter in peril in The Panic Room, will play........the daughter in peril. No word on who Juliette "Bride of Satan" Lewis will be playing.

It's also interesting to note that this is Mike Figgis's most commercially viable project since Leaving Las Vegas (which itself was a small movie that was greatly helped by Academy Award attention). To give you a sense of Figgis' box office history, the 5 films he's released theatrically since Leaving Las Vegas in 1995 have earned a *total* North American box office of less than $4 million. So it's going to be interesting to see whether Cold Creek Manor turns out to be stylistically similar to his earlier projects or whether he's aiming for something more mainstream. Two weeks before its intended release and suddenly Cold Creek Manor has been pushed back to September 19th. Interesting. (Jennifer Turnock/BOP)
