In the annals of pointless horror remakes, this one still manages to fall somewhere near the bottom. I really like Brittany Snow as an actress, though. |
The breakout of movie remakes in recent years appears to have developed into an infestation. Prom Night seeks to join recent "re-imaginings" – including The Omen, King Kong, Dawn of the Dead, The Hills Have Eyes and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – in the quest for box office fame. Will writer JS Cardone (The Covenant) and director Nelson McCormick provide a film that can successfully compete with the anticipated release of Rob Zombie’s remake of Halloween?
Similar to the original Prom Night (1980), a sadistic killer emerges on the night of the senior prom to demand payment for Donna’s (Brittany Snow) past misdeeds. The original film featured Jamie Lee Curtis (Kim Hammond) and Leslie Nielsen and spawned three sequels; however, the remake will feature talent unknown to the horror genre including Brittany Snow (John Tucker Must Die), Kellan Lutz (Accepted and Stick It), Brianne Davis (Jarhead), Scott Porter (Music and Lyrics, Friday Night Lights), Kelly Blatz (Raise Your Voice), Jana Kramer (Click), and Tatum Adair (Ghost Lake).
This film should draw on the standard slasher film fan base, however the question is whether this will be enough. Recent releases continue to raise the bar of expectations for that perfect balance between psychological thriller and gory, gut-wrenching special effects. It is uncertain whether the Prom Night remake will rise to the high standards that other recent remakes have set. (Meghan Peel/BOP)
