Nino Micelli (Pierrino Mascarino) is an elderly Italian peasant who is journeying to America for the first time in his long life. He has a nephew named Robert (Joe Mantegna) in the U.S. whom he hasn't seen in more than 30 years, and he's very thrilled to be making a new connection with that long-lost portion of his family. Nino sends a letter to Nino and his wife Marie (Anne Archer) to announce his arrival, but their 12-year-old daughter Gina (Gina Mantegna) misplaces it. No one knows he is on his way.
As it happens, just as the American Micellis are surprised by Nino's arrival, Nino is stunned to find that his relatives are not at all what he expected. Disconnected from one another, they live almost completely individual lives. Robert is obsessed with his job and getting ahead, especially in light of the revelation that he is potentially up for a promotion. Marie's time is completely filled with chauffeuring her children from place to place and her own work. Like so many other busy mothers, she hardly ever cooks and frequently finds herself alone and unsatisfied with her family's way of life.
The two kids in the family are Bobby and Gina. Fifteen-year-old Bobby is completely involved in his music and the growing pains that go along with moving to a new school and making new friends. Gina, meanwhile, is oblivious to the tension in her own home and spends most of her time at her friend's house. More than anything, she wants her parents to buy her a puppy she saw at a pet store, but her father just won't bend.
Nino slowly finds his way to the family's heart. With Gina, he finds a commonality in love of dogs, and with Bobby he shares a love of music. For Marie, he helps her to reconnect with her love of cooking. Even with these small successes, he just can't find his way into Robert's heart. How will he connect with his nephew?
After some extremely successful test screenings in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Uncle Nino will receive a platform release that will rely on strong word-of-mouth to build its business. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
