Don’t Say A Word is based on the Andrew Klavan book, which won the 1992 Edgar Award for Best Novel. A New York psychiatrist, played by Michael Douglas, has his daughter kidnapped by a criminal played by Sean Bean, who is best known in the US for his role as Alec Trevalyan, the villain in Goldeneye. The trick here is that Bean’s character, Patrick Koster, can only get the money from a heist if he can pick the brain of a catatonic patient (played by Brittany Murphy of Clueless fame). It’s this problem that causes him to kidnap the shrink’s daughter, to force the doctor into treating the woman. The role is unusually personal for Douglas, because he was the subject of a foiled kidnapping attempt as a boy.

This film continues to bounce around the schedule. It was originally targeted for a 2002 release, then was slotted for Thanksgiving. Any discussion about its October competition is obviously premature, due to the shakiness of this prior movement and the number of other releases currently scheduled for October 5th. This most recent move doesn't make a lot of sense, so we'll withhold judgment until we're more certain it sticks and none of the four other major releases bails to a different weekend. As expected, the last release date change was not a final one and the film has been pushed up to the less crowded date in late September. It bears noting that while there are fewer releases currently slotted for the weekend of September 28, it is still a very competitive date so there still exists the possiblity that this release will move again.
