Francois Ozon has found some degree of success as the French director's films 8 Women and Swimming Pool have had strong limited releases on North American shores. His latest film, a nominee for the Golden Lion at last year's Venice Film Festival, will attempt to duplicate that triumph when it hits theaters in 2005.

5x2 takes a note from Christopher Nolan's Memento, as it tells the story of an evolution of a relationship in reverse order. The movie starts out with the couple's divorce, and then goes backward in time until it reaches the point where they first became infatuated with each other. The movie covers infidelities, betrayal, tragedy, heartbreak and the glimmers of first romance.

So far, lead actress Valeria Bruni Tedeschi has received a great deal of positive attention for her portrayal of Marion. She won the Best Actress award at Venice, but eventually lost the European Film Award in the same category to Vera Drake's Imelda Staunton. Reviews have been fairly universal in praising her, though they do note that 5x2 is less accessible that Ozon's previous work. Whether audiences are willing to embrace the gimmick or not, it's an ambitious outing that should generate some buzz. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
