Have you ever wondered what a Dutch sit-com would be like? Probably not, but you’ll know after watching this movie. The mind of director and screenwriter Paula van der Oest brings us this unusual tale.
Our story is about three sisters who are determined to stop their brother’s wedding. The brother (Jacob Derwig) is gay, but for some unknown reason, he has decided to settle down with a woman. The sisters must stop this wedding because if he marries, the women won’t inherit the family’s beach hotel.
The sisters each have dreams they want to fulfill, but it won’t be possible without the hotel. Wanda (Anneke Blok) wants to create a gallery for her artwork. Journalist Sonja (Monic Hendrickx) wants a peaceful setting where she can concentrate on her work and keep a short leash on her wandering husband. Michelle (Sylvia Poorta) needs an escape from her duties as the director of a foundation for war orphans and refugees. The sisters plot together using predictable comedic methods to stop the nuptials.
This film was the Dutch entry for the 75th Academy Awards. It was the replacement for the original entry, The Stoneraft, which was ruled inelgible. The main complaint of critics has been that the ending doesn’t fit with the rest of the tale. I won’t give anything away, but it does take place at the wedding. Van der Oest has created a light story that may appeal to a broad audience. It will be sure to get more attention because of the Academy Award nomination. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
