Kenneth Branagh has directed a number of Shakespearian adaptations for the big screen. From Henry V to Much Ado About Nothing to Hamlet to Love's Labour's Lost, the helmer has covered the gamut of The Bard's offerings, including comedies, histories and tragedies. Now, he'll tackle one of Shakespeare's most popular romantic comedies, As You Like It, which will have a setting inspired by 19th century Japan.
The story sets out with the ousting of the Duke from his throne by his own brother. The Duke also happens to be the father of Rosalind, who remains behind at the court. Along with some loyal servants, the Duke hides out in the Forest of Arden. When Rosalind falls in love with the orphan Orlando, she is tossed from the court herself. As so often happens in Shakespeare's work, our young heroine disguises herself as a young man named Ganymede, mainly in order that she can stay safe in the forest. Will the romances work themselves out?
The cast lined up for the film is terrific, as it usually is for these productions. Bryce Dallas Howard, Kevin Kline, Janet McTeer, Alfred Molina and Romola Garai are all set to star. Look for the film to be a fun romp through a new interpretation of Shakespeare's work. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
