A Guy Thing
Release Date:
January 17, 2003
This MGM project has Jason Lee (Vanilla Sky, Chasing Amy) as the eponymous guy in a comedy about a bachelor gone bad. Lee's character, Paul, is engaged to Selma Blair but ends up in bed with Becky (Julia Stiles) after a bachelor party, a party and evening that Lee cannot remember. As an added complication, Blair's and Stiles' characters are cousins. Hilarity ensues as Lee's character tries to reconstruct what happened, as well as talk his way back into the good graces of his fiancée.
When Paul is desperate to keep his fiancée from discovering what may or may not be the truth about his night with Becky, he tells her a tiny little white lie. That lie turns into a bigger lie, and the continuing lies build exponentially until the situation has snowballed out of control and the entire cover-up becomes a huge - and, hopefully, hilarious - misunderstanding.
A Guy Thing is directed by Chris Koch, who has some experience in comedies; he also helmed the kid flick Snow Day, as well as Fox's Malcolm in the Middle. Greg Glienna, the guy who wrote the original script for Meet the Parents (there was an early version released back in 1992) is primarily responsible for the screenplay, with credit also going to debut writers Pete Schwaba, Matt Tarses and Bill Wrubel.
Jason Lee certainly has a strong and loyal fan base, thanks to his numerous appearances in Kevin Smith's various films, and he definitely has a sense of comic timing that lends itself perfectly to a film of this nature. Debits for the film include the fact that Lee is by no means a huge draw at this point in his career (though he is certainly becoming more and more of a known commodity), and the fact that the movie is actually an MGM release. Given the general star-power and the current August release date, this project appears to have all the makings of a small- to mid-sized comedy with no real impact. (Calvin Trager & Kim Hollis/BOP).
May 24, 2002 Originally scheduled for August 23, 2002, this film has now been pushed back to September 20th. If dates hold, it will be opening in fairly close proximity to another Jason Lee film, Stealing Harvard. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
