Director and screenwriter Lucky McKee brings us this extremely creepy and violent picture. Combine his talents with the excellent acting roles and you have a winning (and disturbing) combination.

Our title character, played by Angela Bettis, was born with a lazy eye, which led to her being an outcast among her peers. Her only friend in the world was an antique doll named Suzy given to her by her mother. We fast-forward 20 years and this doll is still her only friend. May takes a job as a veterinary assistant at a Los Angeles animal hospital.

After a brief relationship with a filmmaker (Jeremy Sisto) goes horribly wrong, May is pushed over the edge. She decides to make a new friend for herself and guess what she uses. That’s right – human body parts. As you can imagine, the violence and bloodletting increases dramatically.

McKee does an excellent job pacing the film and developing the characters. He has a lot of help from the tremendous acting ensemble he has gathered. This shows in the widespread positive critical attention this film has drawn. This movie had its world premiere during the “Park City at Midnight” program at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. It has won several awards including best screenplay and actress awards at the 2002 Sitges Film Festival. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
