Joy Ride
Release Date:
October 5, 2001
Just when you thought that the teen slasher, or who's-gonna-die-next-in a-gruesome-way, flick was being permitted to die a natural death on the heels of DOA sequels like Urban Legends 2 and Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows, the genre that won't go away lives again with the September 21st release of Joy Ride.
This time around, in an interesting twist on the effects of road rage, two teens goad and tease a cross-country trucker by way of CB radio, who naturally is a serial killer, and intends on making the kids his next victims.
Despite the fact that Joy Ride is co-penned by J. J. Abrams (Forever Young, Regarding Henry), and directed by John Dahl (Rounders, The Last Seduction, Unforgettable), and suitably cast with the likes of Leelee Sobieski (the love interest), Paul Walker, and Steve Zahn, the trailer is dumb, and the film debuts against the Denzel Washington and hip-hop soundtrack crime/drama Training Day, which may help insure little joy and a short ride at the box-office for Joy Ride. Fodder for the rental circuit. (Cal Hubbard/BOP)
