In April of 2005, Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's noir Sin City captured the attention of both comic book fans as well as aficionados of crime cinema. The movie's cartoonish, over-the-top violence set a new high watermark as far as gritty, graphic violence goes, and the inventive use of both color and black & white film for effect made the movie unique amongst other comic book adaptations. After opening to $29.1 million and finishing up with $73 million, a sequel wasn't exactly certain, though the movie certainly made a profit. However, with the Weinstein brothers starting their own new distribution company and bringing Rodriguez along with them as a primary member of their talent force, Sin City 2 was quickly given the go ahead.

The first film was based on the graphic novels of Frank Miller, who joined Rodriguez as co-director and scripter. The interconnecting tales had three men at their center - the man-monster Marv (Mickey Rourke), the grizzled and world-weary cop Hartigan (Bruce Willis), and the nearly deranged vigilante Dwight (Clive Owen). While the stories of the film focused on these larger-than-life characters, they were also surrounded by memorable women - stripper Nancy Callahan (Jessica Alba), waitress Shellie (Brittany Murphy), and a host of self-defensive prostitutes (Rosario Dawson, Devon Aoki and Alexis Bledel included). All of them were involved in battling some force of evil - whether it be an unseen murderer of a beautiful, generous hooker; a sick and demented child molester/murderer; and a bad cop with even worse intentions.

There's still a fair amount of material that Miller can draw from to continue the story on film. For example, while we saw a portion of Dwight's tale played out, there's a pretty intriguing back story there that was not included. Additionally, the Josh Hartnett character whose scenes bookended the first movie looks to have a great deal of potential as well.

To that end, Miller is currently at work on a screenplay and plans are in place for the sequel to be started once he completes work on The Spirit. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
