Lions Gate has only very recently added this title to the release schedule, which will star Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, Damon Dash and Jay-Z and is produced by Dash and Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella Films. The company previously featured Sigel prominently in the rap concert documentary, Backstage.

Sigel describes his own character as a hustler who is tired of living the average life (and by average, he means a guy who is sitting on $100-200,000), so he and his crew (played by Sigel’s real-life rap group, also called State Property) decide to take over the city, creating all sorts of havoc as they build their empire. He tries the maintain a semblance of order in his personal life, but soon discovers that combating the police and the city’s most notorious gang can lead to calamitous consequences.

State Property is the first foray into feature film direction for Abdul Malik Abbott, who had previously helmed several Jay-Z videos. Abbott shares writing duties with Ernest “Tron” Anderson.

I would anticipate a similar release pattern to that of Bones, and though State Property is likely to be heavily advertised on MTV, its box office appeal looks to be fairly limited since it is supposedly a heavy drama. There is a companion album that will be released during the same time frame, and creative marketing between the two may boost the movie ticket sales somewhat. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

Just a week after securing a spot on the schedule, State Property was pushed to the first quarter of 2002. The lack of success for The Wash undoubtedly contributed to the decision. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
