Trippy noir is inventive, daring and ultimately satisfying although it is a bit too in love with its own cleverness. |

Is everything a noir shouldn't be: dull, uninteresting, and tiresome. It's a novel idea, but it lacks a pulse. |
Inspired by the novels of Dashiel Hammet, Brick is a noir mystery set in the world of teenagers and high school. The film was a big crowd-pleaser at Sundance, and will find its way into art house theaters courtesy of Focus Features.
Brendan Fry (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a teenage loner who is sinewy and wears glasses. He's completely familiar with the workings of the social strata in his high school environment, but chooses to live his existence as an outsider. One day, however, the girl he loves turns up dead. Angry, he moves deep into the underworld of his classmates, looking to discover who would murder her and why. On the way, he receives some assistance from another loner, The Brain (Matt O'Leary). He also will encounter a variety of femme fatales - from the rich girl (Nora Zehetner) to the drama queen (Meagan Good). Brendan also runs across an enigmatic drug lord, portrayed by Lukas Haas.
Reviews of the film have noted that it clearly draws its inspiration from such stuff as The Maltese Falcon and The Usual Suspects. Given the demographic it serves, it should be interesting to see how Focus Features markets such an unusual product. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
