Method Man and Redman were apparently watching Half Baked one day and decided they would go an entirely different route with the concept. They decided to make a movie where the main dudes are alchemists of the weed who manage to create a special hybrid. This type of pot makes the smoker ultra-smart, and our heroes use this knowledge to get the standardized test scores needed to get into Harvard. Unfortunately, they lose the formula and run out of product, so they are left to fend for themselves on the mean streets of America's most respected university. Comedy hijinks ensue.
How High isn't rocket science. It's a basic comedy with a rather funny concept on paper that will have a lot of funny folks involved with it, including Fred Willard (superlative in Best in Show), Mike Epps (Day-Day in Next Friday) and Saved by the Bell legend Lark Voorhies. In addition, the casting of Spalding Gray is particularly inspired. He's the perfect comic foil for such a concept, if used properly; otherwise, he'll live this down the rest of his life, but both eventualities are happy endings for me. How High needs a funny trailer and a lot of TRL hype, but it could certainly hit the same niche Next Friday and Deuce Bigelow did. (David Mumpower/BOP)
