Duane Hopwood (David Schwimmer) is down-on-his-luck, recently divorced, and working the graveyard shift at Caesar's in Atlantic City. Working such odd hours, Duane finds it easy to make excuses and rationalize his habit of staying after his work is done to have a few drinks. Even though he absolutely lives for his two daughters and an ex-wife for whom he still has strong feelings, his alcohol problem soon causes him to fall into a lonely existence that sees him feeling hazy and blurry much of the time.
Soon, though, the alcohol problems begin to affect his life on a very profound level. His decision-making becomes quite poor, with one mistake in particular involving a flask of alcohol, a highway cop and a daughter asleep in the back seat of his car. Realizing that his future is filled with nothing but misery, Duane begins to understand that he needs to make fundamental changes to his life. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
