The Scorpion King
Release Date:
April 19, 2002
Hot on the heels of the tremendous success of The Mummy Returns comes The Scorpion King, a prequel to the original film, The Mummy. The Scorpion King centers around a character with a mysterious past that was introduced in The Mummy Returns. It will look to capitalize on the blockbuster success of the first two titles in the franchise, even though it won't directly follow the storylines or feature any of the central characters from those films. The movie stars Dwayne Johnson, better known as WWF persona The Rock, in the title role, with a supporting performance by Michael Clark Duncan, who is most famous for his role in The Green Mile. Stephen Sommers, director of the fist two Mummy movies, serves as an executive producer this time around.
Already set to be one of the biggest movies of 2002, the film will rely on the name recognition of the first two Mummy films and the appeal of The Rock to bring in big bucks at the box office. The popularity of its star is certainly unquestioned, as he is undoubtedly one of the biggest personalities on the planet and has proved that he has enough charm and charisma to sell anything with which he's involved. Except maybe for the XFL, but that was a mess from day one and his involvement was minimal at best; believe me, it would have taken a halftime show of someone walking on water to have made that league successful. Johnson has already been attached to two more Hollywood projects and is set to become a star in movies.
The great popularity of the original movies can be seen in their runaway success at the box office. Both films opened to a total of over $111 million and have grossed domestic receipts in excess of $350 million. In addition, video rental figures for the first film in this franchise are at $52.06 million, which is a very strong figure. There is no doubt the franchise is a success and if only for that reason, the new movie will be a huge hit. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
