Collateral Damage
Release Date:
February 8, 2002
Opening in what surely has to be the most inappropriate time frame, Collateral Damage opens October 5th to what will likely be a somewhat dormant fall season. If everything holds true, however, this weekend should see a dose of larger-than-usual business, as Collateral Damage goes up against another big action movie, Behind Enemy Lines, the Kevin Spacey drama K-Pax, the John Cusack romantic comedy Serendipity, and the Disney kids' movie Max Keeble's Big Move.
The only direct competition here is the war movie, as it is the only action movie in the bunch. The advantage that Collateral Damage has is it has a big-name star as the lead actor. The extent of Schwarzenegger's drawing power has been slowly declining since True Lies, with his latest two movies, The 6th Day and End of Days, doing badly at the box office. Those that maintain that the big Austrian is still a draw have less and less proof every year.
Opening at $13.02 million, The 6th Day was a terrible mish-mash of moviemaking, marketing and release. The earlier End of Days managed to pull in $31.5 million over a Thanksgiving holiday five-day weekend, while totaling only $20.5 million over the three-day weekend. Disappointing numbers for sure, and the release of this film - an action movie that harkens back to Schwarzenegger's early days - in October will only serve to bury the career of its star.
A move for the film is likely, though not guaranteed or official. The reason it can be expected is that a film that bombs during peak box-office months bombs even worse in early October. Maybe a March or a summer release will give this movie a better chance of making money, as it is not likely to gross more than $15 million over this weekend. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
September 13, 2001 The plot of Collateral Damage hits a little too close to home in light of the tragic events that occurred earlier this week in New York City and Washington, DC, and Warner Bros. has chosen to delay the release of the film indefinitely. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
November 8, 2001 The film now has a set release date for February.
