Crossroads
Release Date:

Britney Spears will attempt to find success where her musical cohorts such as Mariah Carey and Lance Bass have failed as she ventures into feature film with the musical dramedy Crossroads. Described in some circles as Boys on the Side meets Duets, it is certain that Paramount’s MTV films will promote this movie heavily on their affiliated network.
In the film, Spears plays one of three girls from a small Georgia town who were friends when they were younger but whose lives have taken very different paths. Spears plays “the smart one,” while Zoe Saldana (Center Stage) and Taryn Manning (crazy/beautiful) are the other two friends. Justin Long (Warren Cheswick on TV’s Ed), Dan Ackroyd and Kim Catrall are also featured. The story follows the three girls as they decide to get together for a cross-country trip. Along the way, while each girl deals with her own individual problems (unwanted pregnancy, a search for an estranged parent), they run into a musician who convinces them they should go to Los Angeles to compete in a musical contest.
The movie is helmed by Tamra Davis, who also directed Half Baked and Billy Madison, while Shondra Rhimes (HBO’s Introducing Dorothy Dandridge) handled screenwriting duties. The story is apparently inspired by Britney’s own experiences. After some test screenings, several scenes are being re-shot due to negative response to the revealing nature of Spears’ attire, but other than that, word-of-mouth is positive. Britney will sing in the film and you can rest assured that a soundtrack will be forthcoming.
With the right marketing campaign, Crossroads has a chance to be a solid hit with its target audience. Since timing is everything with this fickle group, solidly predicting box office success is a crapshoot. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
