This horror film takes a look at the Native American legend of a shape-shifting creature called the wendigo. The form it usually takes is a two to three meters-tall, hairy creature with large fangs and claws with a kind of wraithlike appearance. It's considered to be a half-man, half-deer.
The film follows a family who takes off for a weekend getaway in Upstate New York. They hit a deer on the way there and have a scary encounter with some hunters who were following the animal. The son (Malcolm in the Middle's Erik Per Sullivan) creates the wendigo in his imagination to protect his happy family from disruption. Of course the being becomes reality and takes care of business.
Director Larry Fessenden premiered this film to enthusiastic audiences at the 2001 Slamdance Film Festival. It won the Best Film award at the 2001 Woodstock Film Festival. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
