Indian director Mira Nair brings us this look at many of the customs and traditions surrounding Indian weddings. The film has been shown at many film festivals and has drawn rave reviews from critics. Also, it won the Best Film Award (Golden Lion) at the Venice International Film Festival.
The film follows the Verna family as they gather for a last minute arranged marriage in New Delhi. The excellent screenplay keeps the viewer's attention as the stories of five families are brought together for the event. Many actors and actresses were employed to bring us this tribute to a city where at many times the modern day collides with the traditional culture of the area. In Nair's own words, "It doesn't look like anything else I have done before. Monsoon Wedding is a genuine Indian movie."
If you've ever wondered how marriages are celebrated in different cultures, make sure you see this film. Keep an eye out for it at your local independent film venue. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
