Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson of World Wrestling Entertainment fame is arguably one of the most popular wrestlers of the last 20 years. With truckloads of charisma, a natural sense of humor and movie star good looks, he’s a natural fit for Hollywood. In his five-year career, he’s amassed a slightly eclectic body of film work, which includes the underrated The Rundown, a remake of Walking Tall and Be Cool. Not simply content with cashing in and making mindless action flicks, The Rock seems to pick some of his projects with a modicum of thought involved (we’ll forgive Doom but don’t let it happen again, Dwayne).
This time he tries his hand at PG-rated Disney fare in The Game Plan. He plays Joe Kingman, a hard partying, world famous and wealthy superstar quarterback. His life is perfect as he is single and has no responsibilities…until he discovers that he actually has a daughter from one last encounter with his young wife who unexpectedly passes away. Suddenly, he must find a way to balance being “the life of the party” against the responsibilities of being a new father within all the expected hijinks.
Co-starring is Kyra Sedgwick as his high powered, child-challenged agent. Also in the film is Roselyn Sanchez, most notably the stunning bombshell from Rush Hour 2.
The Rock seems to truly enjoy making movies and is reported to take the work exceptionally seriously - perhaps too seriously, as he actually ruptured his Achilles tendon during filming, which forced production to be delayed. Hopefully, this film and those that he has coming up will do well enough to allow him to keep making movies and develop his abilities as an actor further. (D. James Ruccio/BOP)
