Nobel Prize-winning author V. S. Naipaul's first novel is brought to the big screen. It is the first time that any of Naipaul's novels has been made into a movie.
This film is set in colonial Trinidad in the 1940s. We follow Ganesh Ramsumair (Aasif Mandvi) and his wife Leela (Ayesha Dharker). To support himself, Ganesh has set up shop as a masseur. He soon becomes an expert on Hinduism and mystical healing. He becomes famous in town, which leads to a life in politics. But this takes him away from his one true passion, writing. Now his ambitions and values come into conflict.
Reviews of this film praise the acting and incredible cinematography of the lush island setting. This film had its world premiere at the 2001 Telluride Film Festival. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
