Jeepers Creepers II
Release Date:

In his continuing attempt to create a character even more abhorrent than himself, Victor Salva returns to write and direct the sequel to what was possibly the worst film released in 2001 (and given the list of contenders, that is saying a lot). Like Hell: Jeepers Creepers 2 will be set soon after the events of the first film, and finds our friend The Creeper hungry again, which makes me curious as to how certain plot points from the first film will be explained away. This time, our hero gets an entire bus full of people snacks, as a group of basketball players, coaches, cheerleaders and their friends are returning home after winning the state championship.
From here, I actually have to describe Salva’s inspirations with a straight face. See, the bus is like Hitchcock’s Lifeboat, because the students/coaches have to battle each other in addition to the demon (it's a metaphor so it doesn't have to make sense). Since he also counts The Birds as one of his favorite films, apparently the director will lift some elements from that classic as well. Apparently, defiling two Hitchcock classics just isn’t satisfying enough as the Herman Melville novel/John Huston film Moby Dick will serve as Salva’s “template.”
Fans of the first film will be delighted to note that Jonathan Breck will reprise his demanding role as The Creeper. Of the remaining cast members from the original film, Salva says only Justin Long will make a cameo appearance (umm, okay).
Considering the profitability of the first film (its budget was a mere $10 million), it’s really no surprise that MGM/United Artists would unleash this horror on unsuspecting movie viewers a second time. Jeepers Creepers had a solid though not spectacular performance as far as video rentals go ($45 million), so it probably has enough cult awareness to allow the sequel to do decent business. Just don’t look for me to be in the theater (fool me once…). (Kim Hollis/BOP)
