Perhaps inspired by the notoriously creepy Japanese horror films of the last few decades, the Saw series has redefined the American horror film experience, while like its predecessors from each generation, challenged the tolerances of society with its boundary pushing, inventive gore and psychological terror. While some call these movies “torture porn”, others consider them groundbreaking works of modern horror filmmaking.

Saw IV (along with its sequel) was greenlit before Saw III ever opened and picks up where its predecessor left off.

Jigsaw is dead; however, veteran creepy/intense actor Tobin Bell, who plays the character, is credited in the new release and like all good horror film villains, we assume he found a way not to be dead. His apprentice has assumed the responsibility of torture stalker/killer while Jeff (Gilmore Girls' Scott Patterson) fights his way through the maze of rooms in the locked building where he and his daughter are trapped. With only a single videotape, Jeff must find his daughter in an unknown room before she runs out of oxygen and time. While he fights for his life and that of his daughters, Jeff discovers secrets to Jigsaw’s past that may save them. There are also rumors of the return of a character from the original whose demeanor and outlook has undergone a radical transformation.

Saw IV is the first in the series not written by co-creator Leigh Whannell, who wanted to give the series a fresh infusion of new ideas. Replacing him will be Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who wrote the screenplay to Feast. (D. James Ruccio/BOP)
