The Wash
Release Date:
November 14, 2001
Release pushed back from October 3, 2001
A comedy geared to the African-American audience, starring three of the biggest names in rap, Eminem, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, this movie can go one of two ways: the deeply tragic route or the completely surprising route.
History suggests that a movie like this can flop big-time as in the case of Belly, Foolish, Trippin’ and 3 Strikes. On the other hand, this movie can perform like Friday, or like Next Friday, and it certainly has the star power to draw like the latter example. The key will be how and, maybe more importantly, IF, the movie is sold outside its presumed target demo. Therein lies the success.
Movies like Foolish and Belly can have really solid per-screen averages and therefore can be considered relative successes, yet they were not marketed outside of the African-American demo and truth be told, they probably would not have been successful outside of that demo, either. So the key becomes whether this movie can be sold to different demos, and considering it has three top-selling recording artists, it has a very good chance of being an easy sell. At this point, it is just a matter of will they or won’t they. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
September 20, 2001 The Wash has received a second date change as noted above. It was originally scheduled for October 12, 2001. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
