OutCOLD stars a cast of virtual unknowns, its director is making his feature film debut and its official site admits that its screenwriter is to be determined. Oh yeah, and its release date is now set for February 1, 2002. None of this bodes well for a big box office take, but you never know.

The plot is thinly described on the film's site, but it involves snowboarders wanting to open a snowboard park at a ski resort. They are thwarted in their plans by the Six Million Dollar Man himself, Lee Majors. The cast is headed by Jason London, who was in Dazed and Confused, and a Playboy Playmate also makes her film debut.

This promises to be a typical teenage/college-aged-aimed comedy, which also does not bode well for OutCOLD. In 1999, American Pie surprised a lot of people by pulling in $18.71 million adjusted, given its unknown cast and its gross-out humor. Road Trip opened the next year to $15.48 million with an unknown cast, but it did have the added advantage of Tom Green, who was a teenage household name due to his MTV show. By the end of 2000, Dude, Where's My Car?, which starred two actors better established to the film's target demo due to their TV and film work, took in $13.85 million. Catch the trend here? These types of films have been doing worse at the box office, even when the names attached to the films are more prominent. Given the cast of OutCOLD, the downward trend should continue.

The film will not be helped by its opening weekend placement either. In the first weekend in February of 2001, two teen/early 20s-themed films opened: Head over Heels opened to $4.8 million, while Valentine took in $10.02 million. The next weekend, Saving Silverman, another comedy aimed at the younger set, opened to $7.41 million. Of course, the first weekend in February saw Scream 3 open to $34.71 million in 2000, but that was the last installment in a hugely-successful franchise. OutCOLD has none of the things that made Scream 3 a success.

The $45.15 million opening weekend take of American Pie 2 should be viewed as an exception rather than a signal that this trend is changing. American Pie 2 had a built-in audience given its sequel status and was helped tremendously by the video/DVD rental success of the original.

Saying that they feel the weekend is perfect for a teen-friendly PG-13 film, Disney has opted to move OutCOLD to November 21st, where it may meet heavy competition from Harry Potter. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
