The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo del Diablo)

Sony Pictures Classics brings us this allegorical drama/horror film by director Guillermo del Toro (Mimic, the upcoming Blade 2), which tells the mournful tale of the Santa Lucia School. Set in the final days of the Spanish Civil War, the school houses the children of politicians and members of the Republican Militia in addition to a number of orphans. Carlos, a new arrival at the school, uncovers a dark secret; Santi, a student who was brutally murdered at the school and whose ghost wanders the grounds. The Devil’s Backbone is said to be a strange, unpredictable ghost story and is receiving rave reviews from the festival circuit.
The movie features Eduardo Noriega, who foreign film fans will recognize as the star of Alejandro Amenábar’s Open Your Eyes (the basis for Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky). It opens in New York on November 21st with the possibility for future expansion; however, the fact that the film is subtitled diminishes its chances for any impact at the box office. Nonetheless. since director del Toro is heading up a major project in Blade 2 (with Hellboy on the horizon), it is a film that might be worth putting on radar. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
