Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd
Release Date:
June 13, 2003
Well, this project is certainly appropriately named. A prequel to the stinkingly unfunny original film (it’s so awful that I’ve never managed to watch it the entire way through), this film returns none of its original cast, not to mention the fact that the infamous screenwriting/directing duo of Bobby and Peter Farrelly shunned it as well. That’s all bad news, but even worse is the fact that at one point South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were originally signed to work on the project, but told the studio, “No thanks, it’s not worth 1.5 million bucks to have our names associated with this affront to humanity.”
For those of you who still care enough about the project to keep reading, When Harry Met Lloyd (ha ha!) is set in 1986, back in the high school days of our intrepid heroes. This story will highlight their attempt to get out of the special needs department and integrated into regular school life. So, the geniuses at New Line have figured out that not only are jokes about bodily functions funny, but it’s even easier to sell them to a young, male audience – let’s make a teen movie!
You’ve never heard of the guys who play Harry and Lloyd. Eric Christian Olsen (Lloyd) has had some bit parts in a few movies and TV series, but Derek Richardson (Harry) has no previous acting credits on his resume. You will know a few of the supporting characters, though. Luis Guzman (shame on you!), a character actor who has appeared in numerous Steven Soderbergh films, plays the high school janitor who adopts Lloyd. Meanwhile, the hilarious Eugene Levy is making me sad by playing the high school principal. Also present are former SNL-er Cheri Oteri, Mimi Rogers, and Shia LaBeouf, star of the recent breakout hit Holes.
All that said, never underestimate the lowest common denominator. I might personally be planning to see the Hong Kong/Thai horror flick The Eye that weekend, but theaters playing Dumb and Dumberer will be full of unsuspecting suckers on opening weekend anyway. After that, expect numerous reports of angry mobs and a quick box office death. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
