The Powerpuff Girls
Release Date:
July 3, 2002
"Sugar...Spice...and Everything Nice. These were the ingredients chosen to create the perfect little girls. But Professor Utonium accidentally added an extra ingredient...Chemical X! Thus, the Powerpuff Girls were born! Using their ultra-super powers, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup have dedicated their lives to fighting crime and the forces of evil!"
If you're unfamiliar with this Cartoon Network original series, the show's introduction above sets the premise perfectly. The Powerpuff Girls will be the first of the Cartoon Network's two more highly-rated series to make the jump to the big screen. Specific details on the film's exact plot are sketchy as of now, but it's reasonable to assume that the girls will be protecting Townsville from the show's regularly-featured super-villains, such as Mojo Jojo, Him, Fuzzy Lumpkins and the Amoeba Boys.
Rugrats is another original program on a competing cable network that has so far seen two feature-length films open to varying degrees of success. This show regularly demolishes The Powerpuff Girls in the Nielsen ratings. In fact, a recent week had Rugrats with five entries in the top 15, while Powerpuff Girls had none. Nonetheless, The Powerpuff Girls do seem to be gaining substantial audience. A marathon for the show during Father's Day 2001 showed a 92% increase in viewers aged nine to 12 for the same time slot versus the previous year. Additionally, over 7.5 million different viewers tuned in for the marathon throughout the course of the day. Clearly this show has a nice little following. Currently scheduled for a prime July 3, 2002 release, The Powerpuff Girls is certainly a movie with breakout potential. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
June 16, 2002 Powerpuff Girls is another of those all-important family films, but its appeal may be slightly limited. For folks who are unfamiliar with the show’s appeal (and make no bones about it - the series is terrific), the trailer doesn’t do a great deal to draw in people who might be unfamiliar with Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup. It should still be a decent financial winner for Warner Bros., as these types of cartoon adaptations are relatively inexpensive to produce. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
