Michelle Williams and Anna Friel star in this coming-of-age movie that follows two friends from the 1970s through the 1980s.
At a very young age, the two promise that they will be life-long companions. Holly (Williams) is the more serious and stable of the two friends. She buries herself in books and feels insecure because of her beautiful and vivacious friend. Marina (Friel) has an "interesting" life. Her mother is addicted to Valium, her parents divorce, and she follows the latest fashion trends. The only constant in her life is Holly. As they get older, Holly realizes how different they are and starts feeling trapped by her friendship with Marina.
As we follow these two through the years, we get a great sampling of the music, fashion and hairstyles of the period. Marina's hairstyles and clothing change along with the times, reflecting her wild, carefree attitude toward life.
This film had its premiere at the 2001 Venice International Film Festival. Critics have mostly approved of this film, and it should agree with American audiences as well. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
