This follow-up to 1998's Halloween: H2O, the film that resurrected the Halloween franchise as if it was its menacing, recurring, evil main character, Michael Myers, brings back the woman who helped resurrect, and also started, the franchise, Jamie Lee Curtis. H2O debuted in the summer of '98, and virtually made back its budget during its opening weekend by grossing over $16 million in what admittedly was a weak summer. Now The Homecoming, armed with an even smaller budget, looks to repeat that success, but faces the daunting task of opening in a very weak time for the box office.
There could be, however, a strong advantage to opening a franchise film during a time of slow box office. The release date gives the film the ability to shine with its advertising and stand out as a genre movie amongst what is normally a time for sub-par quality films.
The biggest openings in September history have come in the last three years; two of the top three were been released in the last week of the month, with the top five being released in the second half of the month. The important thing here is to not discount the potential for Homecoming to break out. With the recent successes of the Scream franchise and H2O, Homecoming cannot be discounted as a box-office lightweight. The movie does face some competition at the box office in the form of Joy Ride, but at this point, the better money is on the established franchise.
It is unlikely, though, that Homecoming will be in the top five September openers of all time, but it is important to note that if it equals its predecessor's opening weekend box office, it would vault into the seventh spot. Expect a strong push with some decent advertising and a solid showing at the box office.

As if the agony of tracking this movie's release wasn't enough, the producers have now seen fit to give it a name change to the cunningly original "Halloween: Resurrection." If you want to wager that Michael Myers and Co. will keep this current date, I would love to take your cash. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
