The third film by director Wes Anderson and co-writer Owen Wilson, The Royal Tenenbaums boasts Anderson's most pedigreed cast to date. Starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson, and Ben Stiller as a dysfunctional family of geniuses who live together even after the children have grown, the film has an impressive supporting cast headed by Bill Murray, Danny Glover, and Owen Wilson. The Royal Tenenbaums hopes to continue the upward movement of Anderson's career and further raise his profile after the critically-acclaimed debut film Bottle Rocket and the equally acclaimed, award-winning follow-up, Rushmore.
Bottle Rocket grossed $1.04 million, and Rushmore topped that with $17.09 million. It seems a safe bet that The Royal Tenenbaums will top that, but by how much? The high-profile cast will certainly make an enormous difference, as will the life Rushmore has had on video. Anderson is a relatively edgy filmmaker, not necessarily with content but rather with style, and that does not always translate to commercial success. It will certainly find an audience, but whether that translates into mainstream recognition remains to be seen. (Les Winan/BOP)
