If it's August, it must be time for a mediocre-looking CGI animated film. But hey, at least Fly Me to the Moon is in 3-D, so it's probably good for a few bucks.
For those people who were alarmed by the notion of a rat starring in an animated film, it's unlikely that they're going to be much more tempted by flies. That's right, flies are the central character in this little picture, and they're going to set off on a wonderful adventure wherein they become the first insects on the moon by hitching a ride on the 1969 Apollo 11 flight. The movie does take its story from the original transcripts and blueprints from the NASA mission, so in theory there will be an air of legitimacy about it. Trouble is, it's going to be the second CGI animated film of the summer to venture into space. It might just be too little, too late. (Plus, flies. Ick.)
Fly Me to the Moon has a fair voice cast that includes Nicolette Sheridan, Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd, Kelly Ripa and real-life astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The director and writer on the project have credits on several films, none of which you've ever heard of. The animation looks to be a little pedestrian in comparison to Pixar and even DreamWorks, but if there is a legitimately good story attached to the film, it's possible that Fly Me to the Moon might be able to overcome. It's being distributed by Summit Entertainment, which means that marketing might be a challenge since they don't have the big bucks of a major studio like Disney or Paramount.
