Spike Lee's first theatrical joint since 2006's Inside Man, Miracle at St. Anna depicts the lives of World War II soldiers of the 92nd Infantry Division, the only segregated unit that saw combat.

Separated behind enemy lines in 1944 Tuscany, four soldiers find refuge in a small village that was the site of a horrible Nazi massacre. Much of the film was shot in Italy (though being a Spike Lee film, there are of course a few scenes set in present day New York City), and it stars Derek Luke, Michael Ealy, Laz Alonso, Omar Benson Miller, James Gandolfini and John Leguizamo. The film is based on the book of the same title by James McBride; he also adapted it for the big screen.

Lee paid the mortgage with Inside Man ($88.5 million) and that affords him to work on the more personal projects such as this one, which we don't exactly expect to be a blockbuster. But seeing as Lee is a known and respected quantity, and this was probably filmed relatively cheaply, it won't take much for Miracle at St. Anna to earn back its investment. (Tim Briody/BOP)
