Kevin Smith is always funny and the movie's content keeps it from feeling too sweet. Some odd choices though that make me wonder if it's time he let someone else at least edit his films. |

Somewhere between old Kevin Smith and new Kevin Smith, a funny, pleasant (!) movie. |

Better characters than I expected, not as funny as I'd hoped. Justin Long scenes are great. I found it interesting that Kevin Smith made no mention of condoms. |
Never shy, Kevin Smith's newest cinematic outing Zack and Miri Make a Porno promises opportunities galore for frank dialogue, nudity and quite possibly his biggest box office success to date. Smith's movies tend to stall out in the $30 million box office range. However, Zack and Miri Make a Porno not only futures the aforementioned nudity but Seth Rogen, the R-rated comedy star of the moment, so prepare for a breakout success (in relative terms) from Kevin Smith.
Fans of Smith's View Askewniverse may be disappointed that Zack and Miri Make a Porno does not take place in continuity, particularly since the only other film Smith has done outside the Askewniverse is the disappointing Jersey Girl. But at a minimum, this is a less sentimental project (to say the least) and should better fit Smith's strengths both as a writer and director.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno stars Rogen and the always-game-for-anything Elizabeth Banks as friends who are strapped for cash and decide to solve that problem by making a porno. Since there's a high school reunion involved, it's likely that wackiness will ensue. BOP is also willing to bet that there is a strong possibility that the main characters' platonic relationship won't be so platonic by the end credits.
The nudity likely won't extend to Rogen, whose drawing power has always been more personality and verbosity-based. Add to that Smith's knack for interesting and colorful dialogue and you're looking at a promising mix. The cast also features members of the Kevin Smith Players – Jason Mewes, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith and Jeff Anderson; the always fantastic Craig Robinson (Darryl from NBC's The Office); and, for a little porn-cred, Traci Lords.
