Swimfan
Release Date:
September 6, 2002
Pushed back from August 16, 2002
Imitating the trend of "...but in high school" movies that has gotten a lot of mileage out of Shakespeare in recent years, Swimfan takes on a slightly different source material, as it has been described as Fatal Attraction, but in high school. That description makes it interesting to note that one of the production companies involved is Michael Douglas' Further Films.
Jesse Bradford plays a star high-school swimmer who is part of an All-American couple, with his girlfriend played by Roswell's Shiri Appleby. The new girl, played by Erika Christensen, becomes obsessed with the swimmer, but when he doesn't return her advances, she makes life difficult for the couple.
While teen comedies and romances have performed well of late, teen thrillers have been more of a mixed bag. Appleby may be able to bring in a small-but-loyal group of Roswell fans, and Bradford may be building a fan base from his performances in Bring it On and Clockstoppers. However, the R rating may limit some of the natural audience for the film.
