Jason Segel has experienced tremendous popularity over the past few years. After he created the partially real life-based tale, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, he leveled up from being comedy relief to a viable lead actor. Coming off his recent blockbuster, The Muppets, Segel attempts to continue his recent hot streak with this romantic comedy co-starring one of the finest actresses in the world, Emily Blunt.
Segel and Blunt co-star in The Five-Year Engagement, a movie whose title encapsulates the premise. Without even researching the film, you and I both would have guessed the course of events here. A couple gets engaged at the start of the movie then unexpected life events prevent them from following through with their plans. I’m guessing that they break up right around the…five year mark. Then, I presume that the movie ends with them realizing how deeply they love one another and get married. Admit it. You are thinking exactly the same thing.
This is a key aspect of formula movie making. Even when we know the formula, we are still aggravated as viewers if it deviates from this pattern. As long as The Five-Year Engagement provides exactly what is expected, it should do fine at the box office. (David Mumpower/BOP)
