Position Staff In Brief
152/169 Max Braden I liked Dominic Cooper as Lincoln's mentor, but ultimately this is Nic-Cage quality: noisy and action packed and nothing.

Mayhap you cannot judge a book by its cover, but you can decipher a movie by its title. At least you can in this instance. All a person has to do is imagine one of the greatest presidents in the history of the United States as someone who, well, you know.

The mash-up novel as a popular form of fiction may prove to be a short-lived pop culture phenomenon. Even so, Seth Grahame-Smith captured lightning in a bottle with this elegant concept, a re-imagining of 19th century American history through the gothic lens of vampires as a metaphor for slavery. The clever concept sold well and Hollywood quickly snatched up the rights to turn the premise into a feature film.

Enter Timur Bekmambetov. The Russian director triumphantly debuted in North America with the 2008 blockbuster Wanted and will attempt create his second fantasy staple with this project. Relative unknown Benjamin Walker will portray Honest (But Deadly) Abe with Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona Flowers 4eva!!!) as Mary Todd Lincoln. Rufus Sewell will portray the most evil vampire known to man while Dominic Cooper will mentor Abe and Anthony Mackie will…I don’t know, be his ward or something.

Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter is one of those titles wherein you form your entire opinion based on the concept. If the idea of a bearded giant axe-murdering the shuffling undead appeals to you, congratulations! This is your movie. If it doesn’t, watch The History Channel, which tells largely the same stories, only with fewer fangs. (David Mumpower/BOP)
