An Indonesian martial arts movie with some of the best fighting sequences since Ong Bak. Yayan Ruhian is great. |
Remember the old Commodore 64 game, Kung-Fu Master? Well, if you do not or are too young to remember, google Commodore 64 Kung-Fu Master and you will understand the reference. An Indonesian production company has taken this basic premise and created an entire movie out of the idea.
What is the idea? A single building for no apparent reason hosts enough bad-ass kung-fu masters to keep the ghost of Bruce Lee busy from now until the second coming of Bruce Lee in 2427. In The Raid: Redemption, a group of clearly suicidal SWAT team members attempt to infiltrate said building. Presumably, many of them will be murdered and in violent fashion. Also, many of the gangsters inhabiting the building will be brutally slain as well.
Make no mistake on the point. The Raid: Redemption is an action flick with a focus on extreme violence. If you are interested in the concept but are not a fan of subtitles, there is also a planned North American remake in the offing. If you cannot wait until then, either watch The Raid: Redemption now or hunt down a ROM version of Kung-Fu Master. (David Mumpower/BOP)
