What do you get when you mix love, comas, and bullfighting and put them all into a movie? Of course, you get this offering from award-winning Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar.
The film centers on the trials and tribulations of two couples and the friendship that develops between the two gentlemen, Benigno (Javier Camara) and Marco (Dario Grandetti). Benigno is a nurse and has been looking after a coma patient named Alicia (Leonor Watling), who is a young ballet student. Marco's girlfriend, Lydia (Rosario Flores), is a bullfighter, by profession and has been gored by a bull and fallen into a coma. We see dramatic "conversations" between the gentlemen and their comatose loves and how they deal with their situations.
Sony Pictures Classics is probably shooting for a Best Foreign-Language Film nomination for the Academy Awards this year. Almodóvar's last film, All About My Mother, won the same award at the 2000 Academy Awards. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
